Typo Up and Running
05/09/26

My site has been down for the past couple weeks while I slowly switched my hosting from Dreamhost to Textdrive. It was a process that I though would take a couple hours but ended up taking alot more time. So far I am really pleased with the results though. My blog is running much, much quicker and I have yet to get any errors. Since I only had a few entries in my blog before switching, I have decided to just start from scratch again. Thanks to the guys at Textdrive for their help with setting up everything; there were a few problems that I ran into that I could not figure out how to get around.

so what you think of textdrive, i am thinking of doing their hosting for life plan. I want a better host and since my time with my host is almost over, think its time to switch. what you think?

Textdrive is pretty good. There system isn't set up for a novice unix user at all, but I don't think you'll have a problem with that. Most things are done via ssh and they use webmin, for there web administration. I have had a couple problems with downtime in the past, but they have just moved all their servers to a new building and the servers have only been down once since then. What I love about them is host fast Typo runs. Under Dreamhost my typo hardly ran at all, after the switch, it's damn quick.

I am actually trying to load typo on textdrive and it has been brutal. Does anyone know where I can find some instructions on how to set it up. Thanks

Hi Marion, You should check out "this post":http://weblog.0x7b.com/articles/2005/09/17/lighttpd-setup-on-textdrive-com on 0x7b. He has a couple posts about how to get it up and running. Also, if you're still having some trouble, the people at "textdrive":http://www.textdrive.com are quite good at giving you a hand getting things started.

I put together a Switchtower deployment file for use with TextDrive. It's great for setting up lighty automatically, adding cron jobs, and of course, updating your site on TextDrive (link'd to from my name above). After many problems with Dreamhost, I've managed to keep my blog up and running well with a cron job that kills dispatch.fcgi every hour. My Dreamhost site works well now (with Typo), but I also like the flexibility of TextDrive and the use of lighttpd.
